‘As I travel along the old roads of Leitrim I often feel moved, touched, excited by the natural beauty I see all around. I want to capture that powerful moment and to share it.’

I have lived in Ireland for eighteen years and always feel I have come home. The countryside, the light, the culture and history resonate within me. I have a positive view of the world and believe part of our reason to be here is to make it an even better place - whether by creating something lovely, just noticing something beautiful, or sharing a good experience... I try to convey this in my work. I have two main strong styles within my work, conveyed through the imaginative: painting fantastical landscapes, and creating textural work, often three dimensional, of the signs and symbols of ancient civilization. I have studied many ancient cultures, especially Celtic, Egyptian and Aztec, and am amazed at the common threads and designs that run through so many traditions. I trained in textiles which helped me develop an eye for detail and the capacity for and interest in using a wide variety of media. My main subject was embroidery, which I studied under the legendary Mrs. Parker (Constance Howard) at Goldsmith's College in London. My starting point is always a drawing.

I have worked in many different places, under different circumstances, and with people from all walks of life: I see art as an excellent medium for learning, and I see learning as a lifelong process. I believe that life becomes richer, more beautiful and infinitely more exciting as the creative aspects of ones nature are given to opportunity to develop. I have watched the wonder that spreads across a person's face as they see what they have achieved - a magical moment - and the pride that goes with that sense of achievement.

Sue Hill works in collaboration with her partner, woodworker Maurice Liddy. Using native Irish timbers, together they create a range of functional interior pieces under the "Artwood" brand. Their collection ranges from quirky, spalted-beech medicine cabinets, with intricate insets of textile and gold leaf studies, to a series of varying size salt boxes. Using ancient symbols, Sue also designs a contemporary range of wood pyrographed cards.
