Living in a beautiful valley in Co Leitrim, I am inspired by the colours and shapes of the surrounding landscape. I enjoy growing flowers and have a flower garden behind my cottage. The garden provides both relaxation and inspiration. The flowers are the theme for many of my designs. The Dartry Mountains form a backdrop to my home and Arroo, the most northerly summit was the source for my company name. I trained in both studio art and art history and have an M.A. in art history. Prior to beginning my business in 2005, I was a curator and was involved in arts administration.
I design and create room screens and interior accessories. Treasures of an heirloom quality that are designed to be used. These products are not mass-produced, and they never will be. In creating patterns for my screens and textiles, I may draw upon such things as architectural ornament and antique textile design. I have a lifelong interest in the use of ornamentation throughout history. In the past year, my work has been featured in a number of magazines including House and Home, which listed Arroo as one of the hot new design companies in Ireland. Arroo is also included in Eoin Lyon's "Interior Design Source Book." I have recently completed several major wall-hangings for the new Castle Dargan Hotel.
I am inspired to make objects that are beautiful to look at, but which are also functional so that people will enjoy using them for years to come. I am happy to take commissions for room- and fire-screens and wall-hangings, and I offer a bespoke service so that customers can customise panels to suit their unique style. In addition to painted objects, I also work with textiles, making tea cosies and personal accessories such as brooches and scarves.
